Low Life

“New York New York, big city of dreams / and everything in New York ain’t alway what it seems / you might get fooled, if you come from out of town / But I´m down by law and I know my way around.“ (Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five)

uc Sante's literary masterpiece "Low Life" (1954) presents a New York circa 1900 that may be largely unknown to many. The author vividly describes the temptations and incalculable risks of the rapidly growing metropolis and unearths urban episodes of astonishing content. It was during my studies in New York that I first painted pictures referring to the history of New York, at that time significantly supported by the invaluable advice of the artists Marshall Arisman, Riccardo Vecchio and Gary Panter.
