HORSEPOWER, 2008

spray-paint, 3 m x 7 m

Wuppertal, Germany

"I had to travel by mail because my Lithuanian had stayed in Turkey. When it happened that we came to a narrow hollow road between high thorn hedges, I reminded the postillon to give a signal with his horn so that we would not get stuck against another carriage in this narrow passage. My fellow started and blew the horn at the top of his lungs, but all his efforts were in vain. Not a single sound came out, which was quite inexplicable to us, and in fact was to be considered a real misfortune, since another carriage coming towards us soon bumped into us, and it was impossible to get past it. Nevertheless, I jumped out of my carriage and unhitched the horses first. Thereupon I took the carriage together with four wheels and all the parcels on my shoulders and jumped with it over the bank and hedge about nine feet high, which, considering the weight of the carriage, was no small matter, over to the field. By another jump back, I got past the foreign carriage and back into the path. Then I hurried back to our horses, took one under each arm, and fetched them in the same way, namely by jumping over and over twice, hitched up again, and happily reached the inn at the end of the station.“
