I associated my studies above all with a promise of freedom, the opportunity to try things out without reservations, failure included. The associated attitude towards life was expressed by two posters in our 6-person shared apartment in Marburg. On the inside of the toilet door hung the portrait of a little boy with a bobble hat, captioned with the modified Nietzsche quote "Live wild and dangerously Arthur." On the outside hung the US enfant terrible Frank Zappa sitting naked on the toilet. [...]

In doing so, he was also able to refer to former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, who had already noted in 1968 that there were too many sociologists and political scientists: "We need many more students who choose decent professions that are also useful to society."
