"I made another sea voyage from England with Captain Hamilton. We went to the East Indies. I had a hen-dog with me, which, as I could assert in the most proper sense, was not worth its weight in gold; for it never deceived me. One day, when, according to the best observations we could make, we were still at least three hundred miles from land, my dog marked. I looked at him with astonishment for nearly a full hour, and told the circumstance to the captain and every officer on board, asserting that we must be near land, for my dog scented game. This caused general laughter, by which I did not let myself be misled at all in the good opinion of my dog."
