"He told me that he had bought the rifle when he went to India to take up his first position as a surgeon. The possession of such a rifle had belonged at that time to the obligatory equipment for his kind. However, he had gone hunting with it only once, and on that occasion he had also neglected to inaugurate the rifle as he should have done. Now he wanted to know whether the rifle still worked and found out that its recoil alone could kill him.“
