78.7 x 57.1 inches Following the expulsion of the Metropolitan Police by Wood's Municipal Police, the 7th Regiment of the National Guard finally came to the aid of the outnumbered Metropolitans. It gained access to the hard-fought City Hall, where Mayor Fernando Wood was entrenched.

General Sandford and his soldiers escorting him with bayonets fixed finally led the mayor away. The latter, however, was on the loose in no time, thanks to his excellent political and legal connections. New York State had to pay for the resulting chaos. In the weeks that followed, the two rival police forces continued their feud, so that thieves, muggers and gang members could go about their business completely unmolested. You could even be robbed on Broadway in broad daylight. Police officers threw each other out of their precincts. If one police unit arrested someone, the other would let him go out of spite... and vice versa.
