At night, the lone soldier stalks through unknown terrain. Even a harmless injury could become dangerous. The longer the war lasted, the worse the medical care became. All this had been foreseeable, but in the ranks of the European elites an almost apocalyptic longing had prevailed even before the war began. They had clearly foreseen the catastrophe of war, without wanting to take any countermeasures.
