"Among the cooking creatures as all other animals there is only one sex. Everything grows on trees, which, however, according to their different fruits, also differ greatly from each other in size and leaves. Those on which the cooking creatures or men grow are much more beautiful than the others, have large, straight branches and flesh-colored leaves, and their fruit consists of nuts, which have very hard shells and are at least six feet long. When these are ripe, which can be seen by the change in their color, they are picked with great care and kept as long as it is thought good. Now, if one wants the seed of these nuts alive, one throws them into a large cauldron of boiling water, and in a few hours the shells open and the creature springs forth. Their spirit is always already, before they come into the world, formed by nature to a special purpose. Out of one shell comes a soldier, out of another a philosopher, out of a third a divine scholar, out of a fourth a jurist, out of a fifth a tenant farmer, out of a sixth a peasant, and so on; and each immediately begins to make himself perfect in the exercise of what he knew before merely theoretically."
