Paul Owen plays a role for Patrick insofar as he seems to achieve what Patrick considers desirable for himself – and Paul at times punishes him with a certain condescension. Patrick, consumed by envy, finally takes revenge for condescension and insult by murdering Paul.
Later, during questioning by a private detective, Patrick struggles with character attributes with which he is supposed to describe the mysteriously vanished Paul Owen, who is as unloved as he is dull.
